Dorset Marble Quarry
Photographed in Vermont, 2011
First mined in 1785, this is the oldest commercial marble quarry in the US. Its stone was used to build the New York Public Library's main branch and the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts. My wife's family has been swimming here for generations — starting back when it was hidden from view and long before the internet made it a destination — as her dad spent his childhood summers nearby.
